Friday Night Lights Finally Shine at Crescenta Valley High School. For as long as I can remember, the dream of having lights at Crescenta Valley High School’s football field has lived in the hearts of our community. Growing up in La Crescenta and attending CV myself back in the early ’80s, I remember the frustration every time Friday rolled around. If you wanted to see a Falcon football game, you had to pile into cars and head down to Glendale High School. Parents weren’t always thrilled about the drive, parking was a headache, and the whole experience felt disconnected. We couldn’t just walk over after school, meet friends from the neighborhood, or celebrate with a burger at Bob’s Big Boy afterward. We missed out on that true “Friday night lights” tradition that so many other schools enjoyed.
Graduation ceremonies were no different. Instead of walking across the field where we spent our teenage years, we were bussed off to Stengel Field. That sense of home and pride in our own backyard was always missing. Only in recent years did CV students finally start celebrating graduation on the football field itself — and now, with the new stands and brilliant stadium lights, our school has finally stepped into the spotlight.
Having true home games at Crescenta Valley High School keeps kids (and Friday night energy) right here in La Crescenta. Cheer with neighbors, grab a bite nearby, and make memories under the lights — without the long schlep.
The first game under the lights was nothing short of magical. Crescenta Valley football coach Hudson Gossard carried not only the weight of a coaching change and caring for his wife through surgery, but also the legacy of his late father, Dennis, who gave more than 50 years to Falcon football. Just before kickoff, Gossard’s wife surprised him with their pre-game kiss — a gesture that made the moment even more emotional. The Falcons went on to beat South Pasadena 42-21, and the energy in the stadium was unforgettable.
Of course, with home games will come a little more traffic, a few more buses, and maybe some noise. But as a parent and a longtime resident of La Crescenta, I see this as a gift. Our kids finally have a place to gather safely in their own neighborhood. Our local restaurants and shops will see more business on Friday nights. And soon, the track will reopen so neighbors can once again enjoy evening walks under the lights.
This is more than just football. It’s about community, pride, and tradition finally taking root right here in La Crescenta. To all the students, parents, and neighbors who fought for this over the years — thank you. The lights at Crescenta Valley High School are more than just stadium fixtures; they are a beacon for what makes this community so special.
Quick shout-out to our local schools: The Glendale Unified School District continues to shine — from dedicated teachers to parent involvement and spirited student life. Maybe it’s the mountain air, maybe it’s the Falcon pride, but our campuses know how to rally.
And if you’ve ever wondered, “What’s for sale near Crescenta Valley High School?” — you’re not alone! I’m happy to send a fresh list of homes within a quick stroll (or victory lap) of the stadium. 🏈
